Nursery Transition Time

We were in the nursery today.  The weather was so good we decided to have our activity time outside.

It was great fun!

We decided to have a go at sledging even though the snow had pretty much disappeared!!!!

We tried out the tyres for size.

We did some towing.

And some sliding down the chutes.

We all had big smiles:-)

We found some excellent pieces of ice with patterns and shapes all over them.

We can't wait until we do it all again.

Writing a Boat Story

After we had sailed our foil boats we wrote an imaginative story about them.

We had to think about a character, a place and an adventure.

Everyone came up with some really good ideas.

We concentrated for ages on our pictures and writing.

P1 are beginning to write their first sentences.

P2 are starting to write paragraphs with lots of good punctuation.

The important thing is to have a go. If we make mistakes, that's ok! That's how we learn:-)

We ran out of time, but will finish them next time:-)

Learning New Sounds

Each week we learn two new sounds.

We now know the whole alphabet.

We have moved onto digraphs which are just two letters put together to make a new sound. Like 'sh'.

This week we did 'ou' and 'ue'.

There are also alternative sounds for each of these digraphs which we will do another time.

We try different strategies to try and remember the sounds.

Plasticine words is just one of them the children can choose.

Floating Toys

The challenge was to build a boat using one piece of tin foil.

We spoke about gravity pulling the boat down and upthrust pushing it back up.

We thought about the foil and how it behaved in water when it was a sheet of foil and when it was all balled up.

We thought about boat shapes and how they were able to float. Then we took the foil and made a ship of our own design.

We randomly picked four people to test their boats.

The boat to beat at the moment held 250 cm cubes!!!

We will all try our boats tomorrow:-)

Cup and Ball Toy

On a Wednesday afternoon we mix up a session playing in the nursery and doing a focus group activity.

Today we were making a cup and ball toy.

First of all we looked at an example of the toy to see how it worked.

Then we gathered the materials we needed to make our own.

We stuck it all together and then tried it out.

We all tried to get three catches.

Some got stuck!

Some got tangled!

It wasn't as easy as it looked.

We did all manage it though:-)

We discovered a longer string was more difficult than a short one.

Next time we will draw a diagram to show how forces help this toy work.

We are getting good at identifying where there is a push or pull force.

We can also identify where gravity is at work.
