Studyladder

We joined up with P4/5 to learn about Studyladder.

They helped us log on and then showed us how to find things on the site.

Some of the children had been on the site already. Well done:-)

There were lots of maths games going on and some updating of profiles.

Everyone enjoyed the help from P4/5.

Book Bug Workshop

Every year P1 pupils receive a bag of books from the Scottish Book Trust.

In past years P2 pupils have received a book as an extra because they are part of a P1/2 class.

This year there is a bag of books for all children up to P3.

This is part of the government initiative to improve reading across Scotland.

P1/2 at Firth love books and they love listening to a story.

Sally read them Shark in the Park.

Then they played a few games with the stretchy Lycra.

The Bookbug teddies went flying.

Then there were some songs and actions.

Everyone really enjoyed the visit.

Reading with P6/7

P6/7 are helping P1/2 to read books and study one thing each week.

This week we are looking at the main character.

Both classes drew the character, wrote the name and a short description.

We will display some of the work we do as the term progresses.

Each week we will focus on a different element of reading. P6/7 will have to have a good understanding to be able to pass on the information.

It will help reinforce their knowledge and understanding as well as introducing ideas to the P1/2 group.

Our activities should also highlight the importance and enjoyment of reading.

The children have a good attitude to reading already and we hope to encourage this and contribute to it.

Listening and Talking

As part of our daily routine we have a news session every morning.

We take it in turns to go to the front and share something with the class.

There is a time keeper and everyone gets 1 minute to talk and answer questions.

Reading with P3/4

As part of our reading development we have a small group going with P3/4 to hear a story and answer some questions.

This gives a chance for P3/4 to practise their reading skills and P1 to hear stories and develop a connection with the older children.

P3/4 were very good at discussing the story and asking a range of different things.

Personal Achievement

Positive Coaching Scotland

We had Michael Swanney in school to do an assembly about PCS.

Although this is a sports based initiative it relates very well to the work Firth has done this past year on mindsets.

The concepts are the same and the bases of the theory is related to respect for others and self.

PCS is something all major sports bodies are adopting across the country.

Hopefully the language of PCS is something that becomes part of our school culture for staff and pupils.

Thank you to Michael for giving us his time to explain the concept.
