Book Bug Visit

We were really lucky to have visitors from the Kirkwall Library today.

They came to share a story with us and give P1 a book bag with three lovely books, an activity workbook, colouring pencils, whiteboard and dry wipe pen.

P2 were really lucky because they also got a picture book.

We listened to a story and then we did some dancing.

We did singing with actions and it was great fun.

Then we did an activity with the Book Bugs and a sheet of stretchy fabric.

The Book Bugs bounced and danced on the fabric.

They even managed to bounce as high as the solar system.

Then it was time for a static electricity song!

It worked!

We had really good fun and we really enjoyed the books we got.

Sorting Flowerpots

We all coloured our flowers and pots with four different colours.

We split the class into two groups.

Each group split their flower pots into two sets.

They had to decide how they were going to do it. Then they went to look at the other group.

They had to guess how the other group chose to sort their flowers.

Making Planets

We have been making our own planets.

We have one more layer of newspaper to add before we can start to create the planet surface.

We have done lots of research about our solar system, the Milkyway.

Everyone has chosen their favourite planet to model.

We have really enjoyed learning about space.

Whoops-A-Daisy Angel

We have started our concert practice this week.

Everyone has a role and we are beginning to stage the performance.

Callie came and worked with the angels and put together some of their dancing scenes.

We have lots of lovely songs and cute scenes to learn.

I can't believe how quickly the class have learnt their songs and words.

Q Pootle 5 - Group Challenge

We read a story about Q Pootle 5 today.

We discussed the story as a class.

Then the class was split into random groups of four.

Each group was given the challenge of creating a junk model spaceship and alien based on the story we read.

Groups had to plan how they were going to achieve success and everyone had to contribute to the challenge.

The groups had one hour to make everything and then tidy up.

The class decided the spaceship had to have rocket boosters, windows, a door, controls, landing feet, a steering wheel and a seat.

Every group got straight to work.

Not every group got as much done as they could have and we spoke about that at the end.

They came up with things they could do differently next time.

Each group will now use their junk models to retell the story of Q Pootle 5.

Perhaps the groups will even add some details and characters of their own to the story.

We will then see what another class thinks of our stories.

P1/2 were superb at their first group challenge. They even tidied up really well.

The groups had the chance to present their space crafts and tell the class what they had created and how they worked as a group.

There was lots of creativity and imagination involved. The groups managed to include many of the the things which were part of the success criteria.

Everyone got a chance to say what they had done to contribute to the group effort and what they would do differently next time.

Sorting

There was some great organising in the home corner today.

Lots of objects were sorted into various different categories.

A bit of team work and everything was in a special place.

Static

Our inflatable Solar System didn't give Maja a fright!

But it was pretty cool to see her hair standing on end!

Constructing Sentences

P2 are learning about putting together three good sentences as part of their focused writing session.

Firstly they decide on a topic. Then they think of one sentence at a time related to the topic.

Each sentence has to make sense by itself, and the three sentences have to work well together.

Some people added an extra sentence of their own. Everyone added a suitable title and the date.

We also have to remember to use good handwriting, capital letters and full stops.

The next step will be to write four sentences and introduce connectives.
