Harvest Assembly
We started off our assembly with a Birsay Reel from P6/7 boys.
They were great and we all enjoyed their performance.
We sang a whole school song Mrs Jones had taught the children, with actions.
P6/7 then demonstrated some of the drama they had been doing as part of their WWII project.
With a set piece of music P6/7 showed three freeze frames about the evacuations from cities.
The frames and music worked well together.
P5 showed us some of their Viking artefacts.
We heard about the shield and sword.
A helmet.
And Viking coins.
P3/4 told us about their science experiment involving bread.
We saw models of germs.
Heard some disgusting facts.
And learnt how to wash our hands properly.
We also saw our own school harvest of carrots and tatties.
P1/2 sang their phonics song and did the actions for the school to see.
The music failed half way through (technical hitch) but P1/2 sang the songs with no music all by themselves.
It just showed how well they had learnt them. I was a very proud teacher.
Mrs Rendall (HT) read a story to complete the assembly.

Tyred... at the End of Term!
Everyone is tired indeed, but what a super start to the year!

Numeracy Cases
P1 have used their numeracy cases for the first time today.
They had to set out the number digits in a row and then add the correct number of cubes to each digit.
The next step was to put the number words alongside the correct digit.
We have been learning number words for numbers to five.
Everyone should be able to recognise the words one and two.
A few people are managing to five.
And even all the way to ten.
The numeracy cases will be going home in the blue homework bags.
It would be super if you tried this activity at home too:-)
The case contains everything needed but it only has ten cubes.
You can do one number digit at a time and understand there is one more cube added each time as you move along the number line.

Our Favourite Book
We got three books from the Scottish Book Trust. We had to read them and vote for our favourite.
We read each book over the course of the week and discussed the key points.
Everyone had one vote. There was a tie to start with but we eventually got a winner.
Our vote will be added to the national competition for best children's book.

Library Time with P7
P6/7 had a workshop yesterday with the Scottish Book Trust about shared reading.
They learnt about expression and using their voice whilst reading.
They tried out some of the things they had learnt about reading with younger children.
Then they continued their study of characters.
And changed their library books in their blue homework cases.
It's very nice to see how super the children are with each other.
Learning Journals with P6
P6 helped us log onto the class blog and find three photos to put in our Learning Journals.
P1/2 had to choose photos of experiences which they had enjoyed or done well at.
Once we had printed out the photos we cut them out and stuck them on the correct page in the journal.
There were lots of good discussions.
With the help of the older children everyone eventually managed to print their photos and stick them in.
